Driver dies in road crash in Orange, DUI suspected
A woman driver died on July 22, 2017, after she rammed her black sedan into a detached trailer parked on Riverdale Avenue in the city of Orange while attempting to veer across all traffic lanes. According to Orange Police Lieutenant Dan Adams, the badly injured driver was rushed to a hospital where she was declared dead. After the tragic accident, authorities sealed all lanes of Riverdale and didn’t disclose the driver’s identity till her family was informed of her death.
Authorities weren’t sure of what could have driven the woman to lose control of the vehicle as there were no other vehicles at the time of the crash. Driving under the influence (DUI) of drugs or alcohol was being suspected as the reason behind the accident.
DUI in America
DUI refers to driving while impaired or drunk driving. The cause of impairment can be attributed to addictive substances (including prescription and recreational drugs) or alcohol and other intoxicants, which render an individual incapable of operating a motor vehicle safely. Alcohol is a socially and legally accepted drug in America. In fact, consuming alcohol is interwoven into the American social fabric nationwide. Right from shelves stocked with beer cans in supermarkets across neighborhoods to the trendy, mind-blowing commercials on hoardings and television programs, booze is king. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports around 28 fatal motor vehicle crashes on a daily basis that involve an alcohol-impaired driver.
Consuming alcohol, getting high and steering the wheel are three highly conflicting things, which should never be done together. Driving under the influence of intoxicants, drugs and alcohol puts not only the driver in danger, but also poses immense risk to general public’s safety on the whole. It hampers the driver’s ability to make well-informed decisions on the roads relating to the judicious and timely maneuvers behind the wheel and the changing road environment.
The key to combat alcoholism lies in seeking professional life-saving treatment comprising evidence-based interventions and strategies and policies to overcome risk factors and reclaim a sober life. Moreover, for any treatment to be successful, efforts must be made to limit patients’ access to alcohol, reduce the chances of drug or alcohol use and enforce the law for DUI-related offenses. With alcohol abuse and addiction becoming more prominent, physicians and recovering alcoholics are now trying to help spread awareness and eradicate the stigmas linked to alcohol use disorder (AUD). It is a known fact that addiction to alcohol is a disease affecting both brain and behavior.
