Orange police apprehend DUI suspect after 5-hour standoff
Published On: 02-15-2018 in Category: DUI
It took authorities nearly five hours to nab a person allegedly driving under the influence (DUI) in Orange. Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) vehicles cornered the DUI suspect after patrol officers failed to force him out of his vehicle. Finally, taking help from the local K-9 unit, police officers managed to arrest the driver.
The five-hour-long standoff took place on Feb. 4, 2018, when the driver hit a trash bin near the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Batavia Street, prompting onlookers to call the Orange Police Department. However, when approached by the police, the driver refused to stop his vehicle and took to the 55 Freeway before heading toward the 91 westbound.
After four hours, two armored Anaheim SWAT vehicles reached the scene. But the man refused to step out of the vehicle, opening and closing the door multiple times. Aerial footage revealed that two rounds of non-lethal pepper balls were shot at the man’s truck, which eliciting no response. Finally, a police dog succeeded in bringing down the driver. The driver was later treated for dog bites in an ambulance.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 28 people in the United States die every day in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver. This amounts to one death every 51 minutes, resulting in an annual cost of more than $44 billion. Alcohol prevents drivers from reacting swiftly to the changes in the environment, leaving them with impaired reflex time, memory, judgment and psychomotor skills.
Drunk driving is a major public safety concern in US
Safe driving on the roads demands proper coordination between hands, eyes, feet and brain. Even the slightest error in alertness can result in impaired judgments, leading to mayhem on the roads. Therefore, it becomes even more important to educate people about the dangers of alcohol and encourage citizens to help those battling alcoholism. According to the legally defined limit, DUI amounts to driving with a blood-alcohol content (BAC) of 0.08 percent or higher. But, that might not be applicable for everyone. Some drivers may not be able to split their attention and perform dual tasks concurrently even at a BAC level of 0.02 percent.
On investigating cases involving DUI convictions for evidences of addiction, it is alarming that the results are quite suggestive. Moreover, it is a fact that repeat offenders face one-third of all DUI convictions, which suggests that such drivers battle alcohol use disorder (AUD). The truth is that those who repeatedly drink and drive are probably unaware that they have a drinking problem.
